John M. Patrick Sr (b. 1775). and Mary Polly Duke (b. 1783) were married in Oglethorpe County, Georgia in 1799. John was 24 to 30 years of age and Mary Polly Duke was 16. We know that John M. Patrick (b. 1775) was in Oglethorpe County, Georgia as early as 1798. He appears in the tax digest that year along with William Duke, father of Mary Polly Patrick.

They first appear in Georgia census records in Jasper, County Georgia, in the census of 1820. Sometime between 1820 and 1829, they moved to Muscogee County, Georgia. They were counted in the 1830 and 1840 census for Muscogee County.  In the 1840 census, he is listed as being between 60 and 70 years of age. The age range for the female in the house is within ten years of John’s age. We know that Mary Polly was 16 when she married John, who would have been about 24 in 1799 when they were married.

Unfortunately, census records before 1840, do not name family members, just sex and age. Some only list age ranges, and only go as high as 69 years, others had a blank space for writing in the age of the individual. Those that do allow for the exact age of the individual, do provide good information to help identify the person, but even those may be erroneous in some cases.

In the 1850 Muscogee County census, Mary Polly Duke is residing with son Thomas (1826), aged 24, and his wife Elsie Walters Patrick, aged 16 (Muscogee,1850 Census).

Most of the records at ancestry and some other privately produced documents allude to John M. Patrick Sr. as having been buried at Patrick Cemetery, however, there is no record of burial for either he or Mary Polly Duke, nor are there any known grave markers at Patrick Cemetery. There are two grave markers at Patrick Cemetery among the rows of unmarked monuments. One is engraved “Milligan Patrick” and on the other is written “Wife of Milligan Patrick.” The idea has been put forth that these are the graves of John M. Patrick Sr. and Mary Polly Duke. However, it it unlikely. Whomever erected these markers did not know the name of “Milligan Patrick’s” wife, only a birthdate. It would seem reasonable that if you know the dates of a birth and death, then you would probably also know their name.  This leads us to believe that these markers represent persons who were unknown to the individual who erected them.

Neither John M. Patrick Sr. nor Mary Polly Duke’s burial location is known, however, she is most likely buried in Muscogee County and at the same location as her son Thomas. Thomas’s son John Milton Patrick is buried at Riverdale cemetery, but neither Thomas,  his wife Elsie, or Mary Patrick are buried there. Note: The death certificate for Thomas’s son John Milton Patrick lists “Elsie” as his mother’s “maiden name,” rather than her her first name. This was likely a clerical error.

It is possible that that Thomas, Elsie, John, and Mary Patrick are buried at Patrick Cemetery, and their grave markers are lost to time, however, the markers Milligan Patrick and Wife of Milligan Patrick markers do not come close to the dates they are thought to have born and died. I think it is possible that they are all buried at the same location, where that location is, is a mystery to be solved.
